Homelessness and the Visible Encampments

August 26, 2025

August 26th 2025

We recognize the growing concern surrounding homelessness and the visible encampments in our community. This is an issue that affects not just those experiencing homelessness, but also the broader public who care deeply about the well-being, safety, and livability of our shared spaces.

It is important to clarify that homelessness is a complex issue that falls under Provincial funding responsibility, particularly through the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, and is managed at the local level by Bruce County to provide support for housing and homelessness in our area.

The Saugeen Shores Police Service continues to work in close partnership with service providers, the community, our municipal partners, Bruce County, and the province to support both short- and long-term solutions. These include advocating for shelter services, housing support programs, mental health and addiction services, and strategies to help transition individuals from encampments into safer, more stable environments.

We also understand the concerns raised by residents, business owners, and community groups regarding the impact of encampments on public spaces, safety, and local services. While enforcement measures may sometimes be necessary to address immediate risks or safety concerns, our focus remains on working with our municipal, county, and provincial partners to provide compassionate, coordinated, and effective solutions that respect the dignity of all individuals.

We are committed to ensuring that all efforts to address homelessness are grounded in collaboration with Bruce County, service agencies, and community partners so that those in need receive the right supports at the right time. Along with the Town of Saugeen Shores, we will continue to respond to those in need and address individual situations while supporting the County of Bruce and other levels of government in their efforts to meet the growing demand for shelter, housing, and support services.

The Saugeen Shores Police Service is fortunate to have a contingency fund supported by our local Rotary clubs and churches, which provides funding to support temporary emergency shelter, clothing, food, and transportation.  These limited funds help to provide short-term relief, while individuals connect with service providers and community partners to coordinate supports.

Your feedback, patience, and empathy are invaluable as we continue this work. Together, we can foster a safer, healthier, and more inclusive community for everyone.
