Flight From Police

On Saturday, December 25th at 2:30pm an officer on general patrol attempted to stop a vehicle for Highway Traffic Act infractions.

The vehicle fled from police and crashed into a residence on Bricker St. A female passenger sustained serious injuries and an occupant of the residence sustained minor injuries.

As a result of the injuries, the Ontario’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has invoked their mandate.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must:

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations

A 46 year old man of no fixed address has been charged with:

  • Flight from police
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm X2
  • Failure to comply with a release order
  • Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code x2
  • Driving while under suspension X2
  • Disobey Stop Sign – Fail to Stop

The male was held for a bail hearing and remanded into custody.
