Children ingest THC edibles

April 23, 2019

MEDIA RELEASE

On April 13, 2019, the Saugeen Shores Police received information about a concern for the well-being of  children at a Port Elgin residence.  Saugeen Shores Police Service and Bruce County EMS attended the residence and assisted in providing medical attention to children in the home.  Bruce Grey Child and Family Services was notified and continue to provide care and direction for the children.

Uniform Members of the Saugeen Shores Police Service were assisted by the Criminal Investigations and Drugs Unit in investigating the circumstances that led to the children requiring medical treatment.  It was determined that the children had located improperly stored THC ‘Gummies’ in the home and had ingested them, leading to a medical emergency.

As a result of the investigation that followed, an adult male and female have been charged with Possession of Illicit cannabis and 2 counts of Failing to Provide the Necessaries of Life.

THC is tetrahydrocannabinol, a crystalline compound that is the main active ingredient of cannabis.  THC    “Gummies” are edible candies that have THC infused in them.  THC Gummies are one type of edible cannabis (marihuana) product.  The THC Gummies in this investigation were ordered on-line, and are an illicit product.

The Saugeen Shores Police Service would like remind people that despite the new Cannabis Act, edible cannabis products such as cannabis candy, gummies, brownies, etc.,  cannot be manufactured and sold.   Possession of these manufactured products would constitute Possession of Illicit Cannabis.  Although these cannabis products will be permitted for legal sale under the Cannabis Act in the future, at this time they remain illicit and therefore illegal to possess.

Furthermore, if a child were to inadvertently ingest marihuana, cannabis products, or any other drug, the child should be monitored and a medical professional consulted.
