Seatbelt Campaign

Spring Seatbelt Campaign in Saugeen Shores

The Saugeen Shores Police Service is asking everyone to “Buckle Up.”  The goal of the Spring Seatbelt Campaign is to raise awareness about the importance of wearing seatbelts, using child car seats and booster seats, and road user safety.

Motor vehicle collisions remain a leading cause of injury-related deaths

in Ontario and are the leading cause of injury-related deaths among children and youth.  Most of these deaths could have been prevented if the child had been properly secured in the appropriate child car seat.  It is estimated that motor vehicle collisions exact a social cost of $17.9 billion every year.  During a collision, properly fastened seatbelts help to distribute the forces of rapid deceleration over larger and stronger parts of the person's body.  It's often the difference between life and death.

In Ontario, every occupant travelling in a motor vehicle is required to be buckled up properly.  It is no longer permitted to ride in the back of a pickup truck or carry more passengers than there are seatbelts.  Drivers are responsible for ensuring passengers under the age of 16 are properly secured in a seatbelt, child car seat or booster seat, as required by their height, weight and age.

Passengers who appear to be at least 16 years of age are required to provide their name, address and date of birth to a police officer upon request. Only

one person can use a seatbelt at one time. It is illegal for two people to be buckled up using the same seatbelt.

Drivers and passengers 16 years of age and older convicted of failing to use,  improperly using, or failing to ensure a person under 16 is using a seatbelt or car seat are subject to a $110 fine and two points on their driving record.

The Spring Seatbelt Campaign is running from April 15th to April 26th, 2009.  During the campaign, Saugeen Shores Police Officers will be stopping motorists to ensure that everyone is properly buckled.  Failing to “Buckle Up” could result in a fine, you could lose your license, or even worse, you could lose your life.
