The Municipality of Saugeen Shores consists of the amalgamated municipalities of Southampton, Saugeen Township and Port Elgin. The Saugeen Shores Police Service provides policing to over 14,000 year round residents, increasing to 20,000 in the summer months. Saugeen Shores is a very popular vacation destination in Bruce County and as a result, Saugeen Shores has a vibrant hospitality industry in support of a fast growing population surrounded by many outstanding natural resources, all on the beautiful shores of Lake Huron. The Saugeen Shores Police Service

The Saugeen Shores Police Service Board is seeking a new Chief of Police as a result of the upcoming retirement of Chief Dan Rivett. The Saugeen Shores Police Service consists of 21 full time sworn members, 3 civilian members, 3 part-time sworn members, and 6 auxiliary members. The service polices a total of 170 square miles with approximately 432 kilometers of roads including Highway 21 and numerous county roads. The Saugeen Shores Police Service serves a community which includes a diverse economy and an increasingly complex transient population experiencing numerous beaches and increased summer traffic issues. The Saugeen Shores Police Service works closely and productively with its related police agencies including several detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police. A close relationship with the municipal organization exists.

The Role of Chief of Police

The role of Chief of Police for the Saugeen Shores Police Service will require an individual who can demonstrate a wide array of knowledge and skill. The new Chief of Police must provide strong positive leadership to a progressive police service. By providing vision and satisfying the service’s mission under the direction of the Saugeen Shores Police Service Board, the Chief of Police will ensure professionalism, policing competence and a demonstrated level of earned community trust while achieving the overall effectiveness of the police service for the community of Saugeen Shores. The new Chief of Police must achieve the goal of ensuring that police competence will achieve public confidence in the service. The Chief works closely with the Town Chief Administrative Officer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership in the day to day operational efficiency and effectiveness of the police service under the direction of the Police Service Board
  • Provide leadership to all service members through a demonstration of successful police work experience
  • Provide a framework for maintaining and achieving the highest of professional policing standards expected by the Police Services Board and the community
  • Provide leadership in the design and implementation of required business plans, annual reports and police service policies and procedures as established in consultation with the Police Service Board
  • Provide leadership in the management of service performance standards
  • Provide leadership in the ongoing effort of improving community based policing services
  • Provide leadership in the development and ongoing improvement of community partnerships and alliances in an effort to support community based policing services
  • Provide leadership in the achievement of defined cultural police service values as supported by the Police Services Board
  • Provide leadership in maintaining a service which demonstrates always Saugeen Shores Principles of Policing and a service which supports quality teamwork, innovation, diversity and openness through a communications framework where opinions and ideas are valued
  • Provide leadership for the ongoing assessment of equipment, facilities, human and financial resources needs in concert with the Police Services Board
  • Provide accountable leadership to the Policing Services Board for the effective and efficient adequacy standards as required by legislation
  • Maintain a strong alliance with the Town.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for Chief of Police will have demonstrated:

  • A successful track record of police management and leadership at the senior police level
  • An ability to create a progressive and innovative police service
  • An ability to create a constructive, open and diverse working environment
  • An ability to value and support life-long learning and development at all levels of policing
  • A record of quality interpersonal skills and abilities including: political awareness, organizational awareness and the keen awareness of the challenges facing modern policing
  • A background in business acumen and problem solving leadership at the senior level
  • A history of problem solving and conflict management in policing
  • A track record of policy and procedure development in support of the overall mandate established by the Police Services Board
