Saugeen Shores Police Service

Press Release

6 January 2011

On the 6th of January 2011 the Saugeen Shores Police Service upgraded their radio equipment to digital from analog. This encrypts the radio transmissions between officers and between officers and dispatch. Scanners that used to be able to pick up transmissions will not work any more.

Officer safety and protection of information that is transmitted are the two main factors for making this switch. Many people have scanners or monitors but so do the bad guys. It is not very safe for officers executing a drug warrant on a home when the drug dealer inside can hear when they are coming and when they are about to enter.

Quite frequently I receive calls from upset people who were checked over the computer system, over the radio and had personal information sent out over the air. Only to be questioned by some friends who hear the transmission about them being stopped or a record they may have.

We will still have radio interoperability with our fire service and public works in emergency situations.

Dan Rivett

Chief of Police
