Press Release – August 3, 2010

On July 28, 2010 at 3:00pm, police responded to a report of an explosion at a gas bar at the south end of Port Elgin. A small fire had been extinguished before police and fire arrival at the scene.  Staff at the gas bar had been filling a camper van with propane when there was an ignition of the propane.  The gas bar attendant was able to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher. Police secured the scene at the request of the Technical Standards and Safety Authority.  An investigator attended to determine the cause of the fire.  It was determined that a switch in the vehicle had caused the fire.

On Friday July 30, 2010, Saugeen Shores Police officers conducted R.I.D.E. checks throughout Saugeen Shores. A 21 year old male from Hamilton was stopped in the checks.  He was found to be in possession of marihuana.  He was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance.

On July 30, 2010 at 11:00am, Police received a complaint about a stolen vehicle. The complainant reported that he had left his truck, a 2006 Dodge Ram, parked overnight in the parking lot at Bricker and Gustavus Streets.  When he returned for his vehicle on the morning of July 30th, he discovered that it had been stolen.  On August 1st, the truck was recovered by South Bruce OPP in the area of Bruce Road 20 and Bruce Rd 1.  The vehicle had been burnt and was beyond repair.

On July 31, 2010 at approximately 2:20am, a 21 year old male from Saugeen Shores was stopped and arrested for Impaired Driving.  After breath tests, he was charged with Driving with over the legal limit of alcohol and Impaired Driving.

On July 31, 2010 at approximately 12:30pm, Saugeen Shores Police received a complaint about a suspended driver.  A 39 year old male from Peterborough had been in Southampton visiting with a friend.  Information was received that the man had taken the friend’s vehicle without consent.  The suspect was arrested by police and charged with offences under the Criminal Code for Take Motor Vehicle without consent, Drive While Disqualified and Breach of Probation.  The man was already charged with similar offences in the Peterborough area. He was held in custody for a bail hearing on August 3, 2010. 

On July 31, 2010 at 8:00pm, residents in the area of Port Elgin Saugeen Central School assisted police by reporting two male teens spray painting the wall of the school.  A neighbour in the area of the school apprehended the two teens and turned them over to the police.  Investigation revealed the teens had been using chalk to mark some graffiti on the brick wall.  The two culprits, both 18 and from the Aurora area, were made to clean up their mess and were cautioned for the criminal offence of mischief.
